Established on January 1st, 1779, with 315 separate rooms arranged around a central open courtyard, it was originally built for trading clothes and for handloom weavers to sell their woollen cloth "pieces" they had produced. Right now, the Piece Hall features small individual vintage shops and a tea room. Throughout the holidays, there are many family activities and events held here such as fun fair rides, bouncy castles, as well as an ice rink during Christmas.
